Week 3

My training partner is back and although it’s been an inconsistent week in ways (jetlag is a killer!), we’ve still accomplished a good amount.  Yesterday we biked 12 miles and the day before we walked (we were lacking energy most definitely) and swam 300 yards.  We both know we need to pick up the pace considerably, so hopefully after a bum weekend (it’s supposed to rain…boo!) we will dive into week 4 with renewed energy and motivation.  I’ll be honest, every time we get out there (aside from the biking), I worry that we are NOT going to be able to do this.  I’m so whooped after just one portion (and I haven’t even swam the triathlon amount yet) that I can’t imagine going from one to the next to the next.  Ohhh, but I want to do it.  I just have to keep telling myself it’s one step at a time and we still have a lot of training left - a whole heck of a lot.  We’ve got a 5k coming up in October though, so that’s our first short-term goal to run.  Sad since most people find that to be a simple task, but for a non-runner, quite intimidating.

Day 13

This week has been a total loss, I’ll be honest.  It’s okay though, because technically we aren’t “officially” starting our training until my training partner returns from her trip on Monday.  I was supposed to keep training while she was gone but my week ended up filling quickly with different plans.

Regardless of all of that laziness :), I went for a 12-mile bike ride this morning and absolutely LOVED it!  I think I could be addicted so ridiculously easy it’s not even funny.  I need to figure out a way to put my bike in my suitcase when I travel ;).  In just a few short weeks I’m heading to the Ocoee to camp and whitewater raft and I’m thinking my bike needs to accompany me there…and then the weekend after that I’m heading to Florida and I’m thinking that also sounds like a perfect biking opportunity.  I thought I was addicted to my mac computer…I think that may quickly change to my K2 bike.  I still need to read the book and make sure I know how to use all the gears - and I also have some “attachments” to put on the bike (ooo, and I want a green camelback pack that goes with my bike as well), but even without all of that, it was pretty simple to pick up and go.

Thinking tomorrow may be another biking day…

On my way to see the new batman movie at the IMAX now :)  Post-biking laziness…nice!

Day 6

Ooo, I’m already becoming a slacker at posting!  This has been a great first week and although I see MUCH room for improvement, I am optimistic that day-by-day, week-by-week, it will get easier and easier and I will feel prepared for the race.  I came to the conclusion that I am needing a few pointers on my swimming technique (I was on swim team, but I’m pretty sure I’ve lost my “touch”), so when my training partner returns from Poland (lucky girl!), we will be calling up the rec center for some help.  It’s been humid as heck here in Tennessee this week, so it hasn’t exactly made me want to bike for miles on end (I hate humidity), but the schedule controls me and when it says to bike, I bike :).  Well, almost one week down and I would say time to start another, but instead I will be repeating week one until my friend returns from her trip - and then we will move onto week 2.  At least I’ll have the first week down pat! :)

Day 2

I am so stinkin’ determined to do this, even if I am the absolute last person to cross the finish line.  Frankly, even if I cross the finish line after they’ve taken it down! Haha!  I’ll admit, I wonder if I’m capable.  I wonder if I will ever have the endurance to do each item individually, let alone do it all back-to-back.  I believe in training schedules though, and I am putting my faith in that calendar on my fridge that tells me what is required of me each day to accomplish my goal.  Today was my first time biking.  First off, my bike is fabulous, but it may be a little more friendly if I invested in a nicer seat.  The schedule didn’t require much distance, but that was okay as it was a good adjustment to getting back on a bike.  That 25 mile back come September is looking pretty daunting, but I have full faith that we will be in amazing shape and have no problems finishing whatsoever.  I guess it’s good that I have an optimistic side :).  I also think about the reality of moving to Colorado with the higher altitude and want to be in great shape so that regardless of the altitude, I have the stamina for any activity.  I don’t want to be thin, I want to be fit.  I think it’s a much more attractive way to be.  So, 2 days down, 150 to go.  One step at a time and before I know it, I’ll be looking back on this entry, having just finished my first triathlon and saying - who knew?!  Can’t wait for that day.

Day 1

I flew back in from Colorado today and although I wasn’t necessarily excited to be back (I love Colorado and did not want to leave) I was very excited to start my triathlon training.  Julie picked me up from the airport and as I was talking a mile a minute about my trip, I remembered that we were swinging by REI to pick up my new mountain bike!  Ohhh, it’s perfection.  I absolutely love it.  I took it out to the parking lot for a test “ride” and didn’t want to get off.  Today’s schedule didn’t include biking, so I won’t get to really enjoy it until tomorrow (mostly because other than sticking to the schedule, I have some serious laundry & unpacking to do!).  We’re looking at doing a triathlon in AZ in December, but haven’t figured out how we get our bikes there.  Any suggestions??  We’re also checking into some 5ks & cycling events between now and then - our first being a 25 mile bike-for-charity event in September.  I’m thinking Ragbrai may be in my future as well.  I mean, what would be more fun than biking through Iowa?!  Ahhh, the adventures that await - but for now, tri training has begun!

A Fresh Start

This is a blog dedicated to the next 6 months of my life as I begin training for my first triathlon.  I haven’t figured out what triathlon, or even where, but I do have a training schedule, a bike, a pool and legs that will run, so I’m off to a good start! :)  I’m a very active person, but I’m hoping that this new step will transform my life physically, although I fully expect that it will also effect me mentally and emotionally as well - and I welcome it all!  I hope that this will be the first of many triathlons to come!  Here’s to the next 22 weeks!!!
